Mattes erkundet allein das Gelände, um den Einbrecher zu fassen. Als Melanie einen Schuss fallen hört, begibt sie sich auf die Suche nach Mattes und wird dabei angeschossen. Melanie muss sofort ins EKH. Notärztin Helen ist sichtlich schockiert, als sie in der schwer verletzten Patientin Melanie erkennt. Franzi und Hans fahren direkt zur Spedition und entdecken die Tatwaffe - es ist die Dienstwaffe von Mattes. Hat der Polizist selbst den fatalen Schuss auf seine Kollegin abgefeuert? Seine Entlastung erschwert, dass Mattes einen Blackout hat und sich nicht erinnern kann. Obwohl Berger ihn von den Ermittlungen abgezogen hat, stürzt sich Mattes entgegen der Vorschrift auf jede Spur, die ihn entlasten könnte: Warum verleugnet Peter Pilz den Einbruch, den seine Frau gemeldet hat? Hat er etwas vor der Polizei zu verheimlichen? Franzi überführt Peter Pilz einer Lüge, und Hans entlockt Silke Pilz geschickt ein Geheimnis. Helen sorgt sich sehr um die angeschossene Melanie, ist offensichtlich verliebt. Wie wird Melanie, der eine Querschnittslähmung droht, mit Helens Angebot umgehen, künftig für sie sorgen zu wollen?
